How many times do we find ourselves saying, “I could really use a vacation”? Even those of us whose lives aren’t overly stressful or monotonous need to get away once in awhile. Sure, if we could all afford to take the time and spend the money on lavish vacations, we wouldn’t have to dream so much. But we have jobs, family responsibilities, financial concerns – or if you’re like me – you just don’t like flying very much.
Not to worry. There are so many different ways to give yourself the relaxation and alone-time you need each and every day – for very little money! Getting away doesn’t really have to be literally going away. You simply need to give your mind an escape from the boring every day.
Pick up a book and read it for awhile before bed. Shopping for the book can be an adventure when you go to the bookstore. You’ll find all sorts of people to watch, so many titles to choose from, and old favorites to skim through. The library is also always there for you – for free. Or you can find a local used book store for great bargains. A good book can take you to the far ends of the earth, introduce you to new people and gadgets, and help you escape while in the comfort of your own home.
Video games can have the same effect. Today’s video games are so advanced that it is almost like being someone else for awhile – or even reading a book. For example, a video game like Fallout 3 for Xbox 360 requires the player to start the game as a child and set a story-line before the action begins. There is dialogue and different missions to choose based on interaction with the other characters in the game. It isn’t like watching television – you must interact and use your imagination.
Video games and books may not be for everyone, but everyone likes something. If you don’t have a hobby, try some out until you find one that fits. You would be surprised at how much lighter you’ll feel once you’ve given yourself a task you love.
