With the weather warming and flowers blooming, our local nurseries are packed each weekend with gardeners excited about a new season. Whether you’ve a gardening enthusiast or you aren’t very interested, gardening is great for a beautiful yard and terrible for our backs and knees. The good news is that Texas has a lot of beautiful native plants. Native plants do not require as much work, water, or fertilizer; saving you time, money, and the environment. Not to mention they cause fewer back problems!

Many of the local nurseries have very knowledgeable and helpful employees who can walk you through good plant options for the type of yard and lighting you have. No matter where you shop, however, you can do your shopping with a plan (or at least an idea of what you want) by visiting Texas SmartScape.  This resource focuses on North Central Texas specifically – what plants work well, the care they need, and even helps you develop a design plan.

Sure, the initial planting will be hard work (maybe you can get your kids or grandkids to help and make it a family activity), but once the garden is in, the maintenance will be minimal.   Plants needing less water will lead to a lower water bill and is eco-friendly.  Plus, less time maintaining the garden means more time enjoying it – and who doesn’t want that?
