Does acupuncture sound like a bunch of hooey to you? Surely sticking pins in your skin cannot really treat your ailments, right? Well, if you’re suffering from headaches, back pain, depression, and many other issues, you may want to give it a second look.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely thin needles through your skin, to various depths at strategic points on your body. This practice is a part of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, but has been catching on in the U.S. over the past few decades. Although scientists don’t fully understand why or how acupuncture works, many admit to its benefits for certain ailments.
In fact, the World Health Organization published a study back in 2003 detailing which diseases were proven to be positively affected by acupuncture. Many other ailments in the study showed improvement, but researchers listed them separately for needing more information.
Traditional medicine is never a bad idea, but if you’re interested in learning more about acupuncture, there is a great article by the Mayo Clinic on what happens during a session, the pros and cons of the treatments, and how to go about finding an acupuncture practitioner here in Dallas.
The holidays are fast approaching and so is colder weather. For many of us, the holidays are a joyous time to share with loved ones. However, for many others, the holidays can be stressful or even lonely. Sometimes we cannot travel to be with the ones we love and sometimes we are reminded of those loved ones we’ve lost. Feeling sad or lonely is common. Everyone experiences both at some point in their lives. It is important to know when those sad feelings are more serious though.
According to WebMD, depression affects almost 19 million people per year and more of them women than men. Clinical depression, or major depression is often treated with both psychological counseling and prescriptive medicine. According to the Mayo Clinic, signs of clinical depression can include:
- Loss of interest in daily activities
- Persistent sadness or feeling of emptiness
- Sleep disturbances
- Significant weight loss or gain
- Loss of concentration
- Fatigue
- Suicidal thoughts or behavior
If you or your loved one is suffering from any of the signs above, please visit your doctor for a checkup. Depression can be a serious issue and one that can be treated. For more information on depression versus sadness, ask your doctor or take a look at this article.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Pink Ribbon
You may have noticed an influx of pink products everywhere. Pink ribbons, pink golf clubs, pink pens, pink everything. Heck, even Sports Illustrated turned it’s logo pink this month in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness month’s 25th anniversary.
Pink may not be everyone’s favorite color, but the color pink represents the struggle and determination of anyone affected by breast cancer. From the patient him or herself to that person’s friends and family, breast cancer unfortunately has a great impact on far too many people. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the United States this year. An estimated 40,170 women are expected to die from the disease in 2009 alone. Today, there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.
There are many ways to support the initiatives out there to enhance the awareness of the problem and provide funding for researchers focused on a cure. Whether you donate money to a charity, purchase items that support the cause, or participate in an event dedicated to the cause, you can feel good about touching the lives of so many in such a positive way.
