Feeling Lightheaded?

We have all at one time or another experienced a “head rush” when we stand up too quickly.  It takes a few seconds for us to recover our vision or balance.  However, if this happens to you often or you feel lightheaded more often than you think normal you may want to see your doctor.  Before you go though, ask yourself a few questions.  Telling someone you feel lightheaded can mean vertigo if not described correctly.  Vertigo, according to WebMD, vertigo occurs when there is conflict between the signals sent to the brain by various balance- and position-sensing systems of the body. Your brain uses input from four sensory systems to maintain your sense of balance and orientation to your surroundings.  Often times vertigo is caused by damage of the inner ear but can be a symptom of more serious issues.

So how does lightheadedness feel versus vertigo?

  • Lightheadedness is a feeling that you are about to faint or “pass out.” Although you may feel dizzy, you do not feel as though you or your surroundings are moving. Lightheadedness often goes away or improves when you lie down. If lightheadedness gets worse, it can lead to a feeling of almost fainting or a fainting spell. You may sometimes feel nauseated or vomit when you are lightheaded.
  • Vertigo is a feeling that you or your surroundings are moving when there is no actual movement. You may feel as though you are spinning, whirling, falling, or tilting. When you have severe vertigo, you may feel very nauseated or vomit. You may have trouble walking or standing, and you may lose your balance and fall.

For more information about feeling lightheaded or having vertigo, please visit the WebMD website or ask your family doctor.

Which SPF is best for you?

We all know the importance of using sunscreen each and every day. Especially living under the hot Texas sun in these hot summers. According the the American Cancer Society, applying sunscreen every day can reduce the formation of actinic keratoses (also called solar keratoses), a potential precursor to skin cancer.  But with so many sunscreens on the market and varying levels of SPF in each, how do you know what to use?

In an article posted on WebMD, American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) spokesman James M. Spencer, MD admits that SPF is not a consumer-friendly measure.  Logic would say that SPF 30 provides double the protection that SPF 15 does, but that’s not how it works.  According to Spencer, an SPF 15 product blocks about 94% of UVB rays, an SPF 30 product blocks 97% of UVB rays, and an SPF 45 product blocks about 98% of rays. “After that, it just gets silly,” he says. Sunscreens with higher SPF ratings block slightly more UVB rays, but none offers 100% protection.

Spencer says SPF 15 sunscreens are fine if used correctly, but he recommends SPF 30 products to his patients because few people apply sunscreens as heavily or as often as they should.  So, how often should you apply it?  An article by the Center for Disease Control has a good checklist:

When To Apply Sunscreen

  • Apply sunscreen approximately 30 minutes before being in the sun (for best results) so that it can be absorbed by the skin and less likely to wash off when you perspire.
  • Remember to reapply sunscreen after swimming or strenuous exercise.
  • Apply sunscreen often throughout the day if you work outdoors, and wear hats and protective clothing.

How To Apply Sunscreen

  • Shake well before use to mix particles that might be clumped up in the container. Consider using the new spray-on or stick types of sunscreen.
  • Be sure to apply enough sunscreen. As a rule of thumb, use an ounce (a handful) to cover your entire body.
  • Use on all parts of your skin exposed to the sun, including the ears, back, shoulders, and the back of the knees and legs.
  • Apply thickly and thoroughly.
  • Be careful when applying sunscreen around the eyes.

The Joys of Nap-Time

When we’re little we struggle with our parents so we don’t have to take a nap, and yet, as we grow older we long for those afternoon naps. Perhaps we don’t get enough sleep at night or everyday tasks are either physically or emotionally draining. No matter what the reason, a 20 minute nap can be a treat equal to that of rich chocolate or ice cream on a hot day. Even when we’ve had enough rest a nap can be inviting. Just look at how many hammocks are sold each year - or how much money people spend on getting the best night’s sleep they can.

Not getting enough rest can be more dangerous than you think. Did you know driving while sleep-deprived can be as dangerous (and sometimes more so) than driving drunk? Exhaustion can make us dizzy, confused, and we may mistake symptoms for other problems and end up making things worse.

So the next time you have the chance to do so, take a nap. 20-30 minutes is all you need to feel refreshed and not mess-up your sleep schedule. You’ll feel better and who knows, maybe you’ll feel like a kid again.

Cookbook!

In an effort to mix-up things a litte bit and do so without having to visit a restaurant, September Services is putting together a cookbook.  So many of our employees and clients have wonderful recipes, why not share them?  No matter how good of a cook you are or how creative, sometimes its just nice to have someone else answer the question, “What’s for dinner?”

Do you have a recipe you think others would enjoy?  Whether you know how to make the best lemonade in town, mouth-watering main course, or your expertise is in baking fluffy cakes, we would love any help you may offer.  Give us a call or send us an email at: septservices@aol.com to let us know if you want to participate - or even just receive a copy when its done!

Eat This, Not That!

By now you have either read the book or seen something about it on Oprah or one of the 8 hours of the Today show. Eat This, Not That! is a helpful resource dedicated to the best and worst foods and drinks available. It covers everything from fast food to supermarkets, down to which specific foods are good for curing certain ailments. If you haven’t heard of this sensation, Men’s Health offers an email newsletter with the latest information.

Examples of the information you can find are:

Do you know what the best food cure is for reducing cholesterol? It is: Olive oil! Antioxidants found in olives have been shown both to raise HDL (good) cholesterol and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, making olive oil a doubly potent protector against cardiovascular disease.

Need to lower your blood pressure? Eat a baked potato! Increasing the amount of potassium in your diet (a baked potato will boost your intake by about 400 mg, but be sure to eat the skin!) will significantly lower your blood pressure.

Perhaps you are having trouble seeing. For better vision, eat (cooked) spinach or romaine lettuce. The National Institutes of Health found that people who consume the most lutein–found in leafy greens–are 43 percent less likely to develop macular degeneration.

All of this and more is available online on the Men’s Health website. Check it out to see how your favorite foods measure up.

Happy Mother’s Day!

September Services is so proud of our founder, Jane, for her quote in a recent article! You can find the article in Park Cities News or just read below.

Did your parents ever tell you what your first word was as a baby?  Perhaps you have children of your own and you remember theirs.  Chances are “Momma” was their first word.  Surely there are easier words like “no” or “ball” you might expect, but so many of us say “Momma.”  Why we choose to call for our mothers is no mystery.  No matter what happens our mothers are there for us.  They kissed scraped knees to make them better, rocked us to sleep at night, told us everything would be ok when we cried and jumped for joy when we got an A on our math test.

Those of us lucky enough to have our mothers around are likely to shower her with affection, attention, and maybe a pretty bouquet of spring flowers.  However, as we get older, as much as we grow to love our mothers more and more we get wrapped up in our own lives.  Some of us move away for jobs to support our own children, others simply cannot find the time to call or visit our aging parents each and every day.

Even if this is a realization that has come to you this Mother’s Day, there is no reason we cannot make everyday special for our aging parents. The truth is, they took care of us in our need, now we can help them find the safety and comfort they need in these golden years. There are options for both Mom and Dad that don’t involve the common of extremes. One extreme being the stresses and burdens of being solely responsible for your aging loved ones. The last thing they want is to feel like they are a burden to you. The other extreme is the nursing home.

Today, there are options that provide safety and comfort, while maintaining a level of independence that will allow your loved ones to flourish. Sometimes all Mom needs is someone to help her around the house or someone to drive her to the grocery store. Home Health Care services offer these solutions. They integrate a care plan around Mom’s lifestyle - not the other way around. Just knowing that Mom is safe and secure is enough to help you embrace the new dynamics that come with aging.

Jane Littlefield, President of September Services - a Dallas based Home Health Care Agency, reminds us that “there are many dynamics involved in caring for our aging parents. It creates a shift where parents become the children and children become the parents. This can be a stressful shift, but can be softened by working with a third party to help accommodate the increasing needs of an aging parent.” Agencies, such as September Services, have been working with families, as a care team, to make life a little easier for everyone. Make everyday Mother’s Day. This Mother’s Day, allow yourself to appreciate your Mother for all she is, was, or has been in your life.
